Call for submissions to
Second Annual Richmond Arts Awards
Do you know an artistic leader that deserves recognition? Is there a business or individual that has supported the arts in Richmond above and beyond the call of duty? If so, it’s time to tell us about them.
Established in 2009, the Richmond Arts Awards program is designed to recognize the achievements in, and contributions to, the arts by Richmond residents, artists, educators, organizers and business leaders. The public is encouraged to submit nominations by March 19 for the awards which will be announced in April 2010.
Developed in partnership with the Richmond Arts Coalition and sponsored by the Richmond News, the awards will celebrate excellence in six categories: Business and the Arts, Volunteerism, Cultural Leadership, Artistic Innovation, Arts Education and Youth Arts. All artistic disciplines are eligible: visual, performing, literary and culinary arts, as well as craft, environmental arts and new media.
Last year the program attracted 41 nominations among the six categories, recognizing both well-established institutions as well as rising stars in Richmond’s music, theatre, dance and literary arts scenes.
Three finalists in each of the six categories will be named on April 8. On April 29, Mayor Malcolm Brodie will announce the winners at a ceremony in Council Chambers.
For more information on the awards program and to print out a nomination form, please visit the website or call 604-204-8672. |

Winter Festival for the Arts
The second annual Richmond Winter Festival of the Arts is planned for February 1 - March 15, 2010. For the uninitiated, the WFA is a City-led promotional campaign to raise the profile of cultural events happening in Richmond during that period. With a re-vamped website, posters, brochure and listings-based print advertising campaign, the WFA is a great opportunity to enjoy free promotional support and help raise public awareness of Richmond's cultural community. Here are some ways to be a part of it:
Submit your event or exhibit: If you have a concert, performance, exhibit or any other cultural event happening February 1 - March 15, 2010, please tell us about it! Visit our Website to link to the online submission form. The deadline is December 4, 2009 in order to take advantage of all the promotional opportunities including free listings in the new WFA brochure we'll be distributing around Richmond starting in January. Help us spread the word, too! We'll have a WFA logo available to participating artists to include on their promotional materials. It's optional but a great way to help let people know you are part of a larger campaign. Of course, we'll also offer posters and brochures for your own distribution as well.
If you are an artist looking for places to exhibit or perform, here are three WFA opportunities at Lansdowne Centre:
1. Artistree's Second Annual Juried Art Show. Artistree Custom Framing is organizing a large juried exhibit of 2-D local and Canadian visual art that will be up for the duration of the Games, starting on Feb 12, 2010. For further information, email Chris Chow. See below for more details
2. Performance. Lansdowne Centre will have an entertainment stage programmed for three weeks in February. If you are interested in this performance opportunity, or wish to learn more, please contact Bronwyn Bailey, Marketing Coordinator.
3. shOP ART! Lansdowne Centre has some empty storefronts available for eye-catching installations and artists of all stripes are invited to unleash their creativity. Perhaps you will fill the window space with something unexpected ... or use slide projections ... or video monitors ... or install window-sized enormous photographs ... or paint the windows ... or even use the entire store to offer performances, hands-on workshops or "happenings"... Selected installation(s) will be up for the duration of the Winter Festival of the Arts, February 1 - March 15, 2010. Let your imagination run wild and submit your proposal(s) using the attached shOP ART form. Submission deadline: December 4, 2009 |

Richmond Arts Coalition Surveys the Candidates - October 20, 2008
The Richmond Arts Coalition (RAC) is currently conducting a survey of all Mayoral, Council and School Trustee candidates to gauge candidates knowledge of and response to arts-related issues in Richmond. “We felt that this was a more personal approach in lieu of hosting an all-candidates meeting” said Janice Froese, vice-chair of RAC. “This way, we can ask pointed questions of all candidates so everyone has an equal chance of providing a comprehensive answer.” Read more...

Richmond Arts Coalition advocates for Richmond Visual Artists - September 10, 2008
The Richmond Art Gallery which has historically programmed five annual shows at the Gateway
Theatre recently informed the Theatre they would be unable to curate shows in their lobbies this
year due to a lack of resources at the Gallery. In order to ensure a continuing opportunity for
Richmond artists to display their work locally, the Richmond Arts Coalition approached the
Gateway Theatre to request the continued use of their lobbies as a satellite art gallery. Gateway
Theatre has agreed to create a call for submissions for Richmond Artists, and provide the space
and resources to hang the selected artists’ work. Read more... |
