Tempting Providence

Time:  8 pm

Gateway Theatre

6500 Gilbert Road, Richmond

Mainstage

Price: Adult $45, Student $30, Group rate $39-$41

The first British settlers to arrive in Newfoundland found the climate too harsh and headed south to Virginia. It took sterner stuff in the form of London-born nurse, Myra Bennett, to endure the region’s bleak weather and conquer its stubborn inhabitants. Nurse Bennett traveled by foot, horse, dogsled, and boat to deliver babies, set bones, and extract teeth on an isolated 320-kilometer stretch of roadless coast. Tempting Providence is an intriguingly-staged story of courage and strength based on the remarkable life of the outport nurse who became known as “the Florence Nightingale of the North.”

By Robert Chafe. A Theatre Newfoundland Labrador production.

DOXA Film Screening: Pink Ribbons, Inc.

Time:  7 pm

Place: City Hall

6911 No 3 Rd, Richmond

Council Chambers

Price: Advance tickets $10 (plus order fee $2)

DOXA Documentary Film Festival's Motion Pictures Film Series presents Pink Ribbons, Inc. by Léa Pool.  DOXA Documentary Film Festival's Motion Pictures Film Series with support from the City of Richmond is exceptionally pleased and proud to present Léa Pool's stunning new film Pink Ribbons, Inc. Based on the incendiary book from Samantha King, Pool's film clearly delineates the corporate co-option of breast cancer with precision and fury.  "Indignant and subversive, Pink Ribbons, Inc. resoundingly pops the shiny pink balloon of the breast cancer movement/industry, debunking the "comfortable lies" and corporate double-talk that permeate the massive and thus-far-ineffectual campaign against a disease that claims nearly 60,000 lives each year in North America alone." - Variety

DOXA's presentation of the film will be followed by a panel discussion with experts in the field to address the issues examined in the film.
